The Good Samaritan: Taking Care of Those in Need

The Good Samaritan: Taking Care of Those in Need

Together, thanks to community crowdfunding, we can help the Parish of San Giuseppe in Castellammare del Golfo support the poorest sections of the population. Upon reaching the goal through donations, the Community Foundation of Agrigento and Trapani will co-finance the project with a contribution equal to 70%.

The Parish of San Giuseppe in Castellammare del Golfo: A Vocation for Support in an Needy Neighborhood

The Parish was established in an urban expansion area, made up of families in need of economic, moral, and social support. It has always had a particular vocation to support the poorest sections of the population. Over time, this vocation has developed further through the implementation of human promotion services, including the establishment of the parish Caritas and assistance to the African continent.

Normally, the parish Caritas assists 50 families in situations of poverty. During the lockdown in the midst of the Covid emergency, the Parish became the city’s center of help to combat the economic and food crisis, supporting 400 families.

The Project to Support

The project “The Good Samaritan” will allow the Parish and its welfare entities, the parish Caritas and the Bottega del Sorriso, to better serve the indigent population of Castellammare del Golfo.

Caritas will be able to better support families both materially (with foodstuffs and financial aid) and morally (listening and assistance center) in need; volunteers will have access to better equipment and more accessible and barrier-free premises.

The Bottega del Sorriso, created based on a project by the scouts, along with various volunteers, will provide clothing, shoes, toys, and other essential goods.

Both welfare entities serve both native citizens and immigrants in disadvantaged economic conditions.

The “Good Samaritan” project has been selected in the “Inclusive Restart” call for proposals from the Community Foundation of Agrigento and Trapani. The Foundation believed in the impact of our initiative and will co-finance a part of the total project value with a donation contribution equal to 70%. For the remaining part, and therefore, for this project to be realized, the Parish of San Giuseppe needs your support.

What Will Be Achieved with Your Help

Through the fundraising campaign promoted by the Parish of San Giuseppe and the Community Foundation of Agrigento and Trapani on For Funding, we aim to collect 11,500 euros to improve the social, economic, and human promotion service for the most disadvantaged segments of the population of Castellammare.

Concretely, the project will allow the implementation of a new after-school service aimed at families in need, involving approximately ten boys and girls. For this action, the necessary equipment (such as a projector and whiteboard, tables, chairs) must be purchased so that activities can start in person as soon as the pandemic situation allows.

Furthermore, the premises will be renovated, and tools useful for the management and use of the entire human support system will be improved. The redevelopment of the spaces will concern the storage of foodstuffs and essential goods for needy families. In fact, the Parish of San Giuseppe will be able to have a larger and barrier-free storage area, furnished with more useful and functional tools and structures (refrigerators, shelving, computers for managing archives, wardrobes for clothing) and secure – currently, some areas of the storage are deteriorated.

Having better and larger facilities for volunteers means being able to operate with more care and better usability in the service of users requesting it through food aid, clothing, moral assistance, after-school activities: all activities that are already being carried out but in precarious and unsafe conditions. Moreover, with the increase in requests for help due to the economic and social crisis caused by Covid-19, an expansion of the spaces is necessary.
