Drop-in: The Community Welfare Project for Adolescents

The Community Foundation of Agrigento and Trapani is a partner in Drop-in, a project selected by Con i Bambini within the framework of the Fund for Combating Educational Poverty Among Minors. The project aims to support adolescents’ transition to adulthood, helping and encouraging them to build their own life projects. This is a community welfare journey involving adolescents from the territories of the provinces of Agrigento, Trapani, and Lecco, offering them concrete opportunities where the educational and social spheres can mutually enrich each other, a need more urgent than ever after months of physical and moral isolation.

The Drop-in Communities: From Agrigento and Trapani to Lecco The reciprocal exchange of experiences and resources between Northern and Southern Italy is a peculiarity of Drop-in, which sees the collaboration of eight partners operating in the three territories. In the South, the Community Foundation, Association Euroform, Consortium Solidalia, and Fab Lab Western Sicily as a support partner, will be active. Moreover, a stakeholder engagement process has been initiated with public administrations and Third Sector Entities of the involved territories to build a broad and efficient network for engaging youths and implementing planned activities. Drop-in’s approach is to activate collaboration and co-responsibility in communities for the benefit and support of young adults.

A key element of Drop-in is addressing the entire range of adolescents between 14 and 17 years old, with particular attention to involving those in conditions of greater social and relational fragility: forming heterogeneous groups is indeed a driving condition for learning and growth processes.

The Activities The project will implement various activities, tailored to the needs and expectations of each young person while maintaining common and defined action threads.

Specifically, Drop-in will include the following activities:

Designing and activating lightweight, multifunctional community spaces for adolescents in the territory. These spaces are conceived as freely accessible areas for young people to study, socialize, and engage in more structured activities that promote adolescents’ participation in public and social life. Pre-employment summer experiences where groups of adolescents are involved in performing specific tasks that enhance a public good. These experiences will foster closer ties to the world of work and promote socialization among the youths. The Teens4Kids – T4K activity, based on training a group of secondary school students on topics and techniques of creative digital education, who will then start horizontal teaching towards a group of primary school children: from trained to co-responsible trainers for innovative educational growth. Vocational training courses at the artisan workshops of Professional Training Centers for small groups of youths at high risk of dropping out of school, who neither have a diploma nor marketable skills. Pre-orientation activities will be offered to these youths to value their aptitudes. As part of Drop-in, the Community Foundation will handle coordinating activities for the provinces of Agrigento and Trapani, involving local communities, and establishing a solidarity fund to support educational activities. Additionally, it will activate a community space for youths in the area and implement the innovative “Teens 4 Kids” experience.

Participation in Drop-in represents an important opportunity for the Foundation to introduce the territory in which it operates into generative social networks and to strengthen its role in implementing innovative “system” programs that work to reduce inequalities.

Partners and Funding Entities The Drop-in partners are: La Grande Casa Società Cooperativa Sociale – Sesto San Giovanni (MI), Community Foundation of Agrigento and Trapani, Consorzio Consolida – Lecco, Association Euroform – Aragona (AG), Luigi Clerici Foundation – Milan, Mons. Giulio Parmigiani Foundation – Valmadrera (LC), Solidalia Consortium – Trapani, Sineresi Società Cooperativa Sociale – Lecco, Fab Lab Western Sicily – Marsala – TP (support partner).

Drop-in is financed by the Social Enterprise Con i Bambini and Peppino Vismara Foundation.

The project was selected by Con i Bambini within the framework of the Fund for Combating Educational Poverty Among Minors. The Fund arises from an agreement between the banking-origin foundations represented by Acri, the National Forum of the Third Sector, and the Government. It supports interventions aimed at removing economic, social, and cultural obstacles that prevent minors from fully enjoying educational processes. To implement the programs of the Fund, the social enterprise Con i Bambini, a non-profit organization wholly owned by the CON IL SUD Foundation, was established in June 2016.
