The “Competent Youth” Program Starts in Agrigento

Regarding the Drop-in project – selected by Con i Bambini as part of the Fund to combat educational poverty among minors – the “Competent Youth” program was officially launched last week in Agrigento.

On November 27, the first workshop of the Competent Youth program was held at the “Leonardo Sciascia” Technical and Technological Economic Institute in Agrigento.

The program, focused on the development of technical skills and soft skills through creative digital education workshops and the subsequent transfer of skills to primary school students, garnered great interest and widespread participation from 4th and 5th grade students of the Institute.

Thanks to the memorandum of understanding concluded between the Community Foundation of Agrigento and Trapani and the ITET Leonardo Sciascia, the hours that students dedicate to the program can be attributed to the PCTO program – Pathways for Transversal Skills and Orientation – included in the higher education plan to promote the orientation of young people by enhancing their personal aspirations, interests, and learning styles, as well as helping them to develop the ability to choose autonomously and consciously.

The activities are part of the “education and training” area of the Community Foundation aimed at offering younger people innovative educational experiences to combat dropout rates and educational poverty.

The educational workshops, carried out by a team of experts in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and pedagogy from the Community Foundation led by Martina Ferracane, involve a training phase for secondary school students on topics and techniques of creative digital education (3D printing, laser cutting, creative enterprise, etc.) and a phase of skill transfer through horizontal teaching towards a group of primary school children. The program will thus see the transformation of students from learners to co-responsible trainers for innovative educational growth.

The activities are part of action 2 “pre-employment experiences and social commitment” of the Drop-in project. The project, started in April 2021, aims to support adolescents’ transition to adult life, helping and encouraging them to build their own life project, and is aimed at boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 17 living in the territories of the provinces of Lecco, Trapani, and Agrigento.

The lead partner of the Drop-in project is La Grande Casa Società Cooperativa Sociale of Sesto San Giovanni (MI), while the partners of the Sicilian network are, in addition to the Community Foundation, the Solidalia Consortium, and the Euroform Association.

The support partner for this action is the Fab Lab Western Sicily.

The Drop-in project was selected by Con i Bambini as part of the Fund to combat educational poverty among minors and is co-financed by the Peppino Vismara Foundation.
