Futurama: educational labs about STEAM, active citizenship and career guidance have been launched

In January, the educational paths of “Futurama – New Models for Digital and Creative Education” were initiated, a project selected by Con i Bambini as part of the Fund to Counter Child Educational Poverty, co-financed by the Fondazione Cassa Depositi e Prestiti.

The Futurama project aims to develop a new educational model capable of providing key competencies in the field of STEAM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), as well as promoting active citizenship and facilitating entry into the workforce. This is achieved through an educational intervention that includes a training program for teachers, meetings for the development of the educational community, and educational paths aimed at young people from the two schools involved: the Secondary School Institutes Sciascia and Bufalino in Erice (TP) and the Higher Secondary Education Institute Odierna in Palma di Montechiaro (AG).

The first editions of the student labs started in January 2024 and will conclude by the end of this school year – two more editions will follow in the next two years. These labs mark a significant step in promoting innovative digital education that focuses on the principles of integrated sustainability and active citizenship, while also addressing the orientation of young people in the modern workforce.

Indeed, there are three educational strands:

  • STEAM Paths: Accompanied by the Centro ELIS Association, students are learning and experimenting with programming, sensors, and robotics concepts; they have been introduced to cybersecurity and are delving into sustainable development and ecological and digital transition topics. In the third and final year of the project, young people will engage in creathon sessions that will stimulate their creativity and innovation.
  • Civic Technology Paths: Led by the multidisciplinary research group Territori e Comunità Digitali of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Turin and the Community Foundation of Agrigento and Trapani. Students are developing their digital and active citizenship skills through the experimentation of civic technologies and the use of two tools – FirstLife and CommonsHood – through which they are exploring and mapping the resources and challenges of their territory and communities.
  • Career Guidance Paths: Led by Beehive Società Cooperativa Sociale. Students are exploring possible university and career paths in the STEAM field with the support of industry professionals.

Furthermore, the Salesian University Institute of Turin (IUSTO), along with the Community Foundation and the support of all partners, is conducting the important activity of evaluating the social impact, measuring the social and individual change resulting from Futurama project activities. So far, approximately 270 students have been involved in the project, across the two schools in Erice and Palma di Montechiaro.

The Community Foundation of Agrigento and Trapani is committed to promoting educational innovation and supporting the future of young people in our communities by offering them learning and growth opportunities that can open doors to a future full of possibilities.

The Futurama project was selected by Con i Bambini as part of the Fund to Counter Child Educational Poverty and co-financed by the Fondazione Cassa Depositi e Prestiti. The Fund stems from an agreement between the Banking Foundations represented by Acri, the National Forum of the Third Sector, and the Government. It supports interventions aimed at removing economic, social, and cultural obstacles that prevent minors from fully accessing educational processes. To implement the Fund’s programs, Con i Bambini, a non-profit organization fully owned by the CON IL SUD Foundation, was established in June 2016. www.conibambini.org
