Politeia: The Story of the “Sustainability and Green Jobs” Workshop Conducted in Two Schools in Caltagirone

In April, the two editions of the “Sustainability and Green Jobs” workshop concluded within the framework of “Politeia – Inclusive Green Economy for the Community,” a project funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation. The workshop was implemented as part of PCTO – Paths for Transversal Competences and Orientation involving 77 students across two editions, the first engaging students from the Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa Comprehensive Institute in Caltagirone and the second with students from the Majorana-Arcoleo Higher Institute in Caltagirone.

Training and Design of the Board Game “Eco Empire”

The educational program “Sustainability and Green Jobs” is designed to introduce and guide young people towards professions in ecological transition, providing them with the necessary skills to work in highly sustainable sectors, thus preparing them for current and future labor market needs and global environmental challenges.

The program consisted of an initial training phase that delved into environmental and social sustainability themes and the world of green professions and competencies. This phase utilized innovative and interactive methods that engaged students, encouraging their active participation through team-building exercises, themed games, case studies, expert meetings, and company work simulations.

The second part of the program, conceived as a highly challenging challenge, involved students in designing and developing a board game to help other young people, their peers, orient their educational choices towards sustainability and green jobs. Participants, divided into working teams, experienced the difficulties of the challenge, enhancing their design and teamwork skills to achieve a common goal. From this came “Eco Empire,” a board game that students will present and test during the final event open to the educational community of Calatino. The event will take place on May 22 from 10 am to 1 pm at the headquarters of the “Arcoleo” Technical-Economic Institute in Caltagirone.

Achieved Results

During the program, students not only deepened their understanding of green professions but also developed skills such as teamwork, critical and problem-solving thinking, communication abilities, design thinking, and graphic design. They also demonstrated increased interest in sustainability and interviewed their peers to create a game suitable for their needs and environmental challenges. While working on the game, they felt a sense of pride in contributing to the transition towards a more sustainable future, which increased their sense of responsibility for the future.
