Education of Community

Goal of the project

Our objective is to promote the construction and strengthening of effective and sustainable educational communities in the towns of Favara and Palma di Montechiaro, located in the province of Agrigento. This process will be based on empowerment and peer community learning, with the support of the Sciacca community, which will act as a mentor and source of knowledge and good practices.

Who is it for?

The project is aimed at the entire educating community of Favara and Palma di Montechiaro: schools, teachers, parents, students, local authorities.

Activities

The project promotes 4 main actions aimed at strengthening the educating community of the municipality of Favara and Palma di Montechiaro:

  1. Peer Community Learning NOI – storytelling and drama to tell the community: through a digital storytelling workshop (DST) based on the methodology from the Storycenter in Berkeley (USA) the various representatives of the educating community will be involved with the aim of developing both ‘soft’ and ‘hard’ skills, such as active listening and digital skills. The contents emerging during the storytelling will be reworked in a dramaturgical key and will be the basis for the creation of the narratives of the 3 communities. In addition, learning paths between the “communities” will be set up, enhancing the experiences carried out in the Sciacca area
  2. Multi-sectoral and intergenerational co-design tables with communities: A participatory Theory of Change will be established through a series of participatory meetings. Meetings led by facilitators will bring participants, children, teachers, members of organisations and representatives of the educating community together to define the impact to be generated and map the preconditions needed to achieve it.
  3. Interventions for the regeneration of spaces for the creation of community centres: following the indications that emerged during the co-design round tables, creative regeneration interventions will be implemented in the identified places. In Favara, the space identified is the one in front of the Falcone Borsellino school. While in Palma di Montechiaro, the identified space is the ‘Centro Salvinus’, on the northern outskirts of the city, which houses several social housing units.
  4. Community events: Community events will be held in Favara and Palma that will involve groups, organisations and citizens to participate in actions that enhance the skills and resources of each with a view to developing an educating community. The action will be coordinated by experts and territorial partners and, through the methodology of Community Social Theatre (TSC), the public will be involved and empowerment processes will be activated.

The community events will also be an opportunity to inaugurate the spaces upgraded thanks to the ‘Community Hub’ project and invite everyone to experience and attend the new cultural centres that will be built in the area. In addition, the community will be involved in the design and implementation of various awareness-raising campaigns based on the needs and desires that emerged from the co-design table.
