Stefy’s House
Inclusion of people with special needs
Scenario
According to what reported by the ISTAT surveys, in our country in 2019, people with disabilities, or those who suffer from serious limitations due to health problems that prevent them from carrying out their usual activities, are 3 million and 150 thousand (5.2% of the population).
For this reason, the promotion of a truly inclusive and welcoming community that helps the autonomy and accompanies the conquest of new skills and knowledge becomes central.
Territory: Cammarata (Agrigento)
Objective
“Stefy’s House” is a project of the social cooperative Santa Maria di Gesù of Cammarata which plans the strengthening of a center capable of giving a real response to the relational and social needs expressed by people with disabilities, by young people social disadvantage and by the elderly alone.
The social cooperative develops moments of aggregation and the creation of socio-educational and creative workshops.
The activities
People with disabilities can find in the center an environment with a positive relational atmosphere that favors the maintenance and development of cognitive and social skills through specific workshops and socialization activities.
The project born from the twenty-year experience of the L’Arca Association which bases its actions to helping the needs of children and adults with disabilities by promoting socio-educational activities with the aim of soliciting an ever greater culture of autonomy and inclusion.
To allow this ambitious project to become concrete, some volunteers of L’Arca Association decided to set up a social cooperative in 2017 which, in close collaboration with it, follows the various phases of the creation and management of the center.
The role of the Community Foundation
“La Casa di Stefy” project is built in a large three-storey building in Cammarata (AG) in which a restructuring and adaptation activity is underway to make it a more welcoming and functional place for people with disabilities.
The Community Foundation of Agrigento and Trapani supports the project activities through co-financing.
